5 Decisions to Make Before You Remodel Your Kitchen

A kitchen remodel is one of the highest return projects you can take on, and one of the most complex to run. The difference between a job that moves smoothly and one that drags for months usually comes down to a handful of decisions made before a single wall comes out.

1. Will you change the layout?

This is the big one. Keeping the existing layout, where the sink, stove, and fridge stay put, is far cheaper than moving plumbing, gas, and electrical. Moving them can absolutely be worth it for a better kitchen, but know going in that it is the decision that drives cost and time more than any finish you pick.

2. What is your real budget, and where will you flex?

Set a real number, then decide where you will spend and where you will save. A good rule: spend on the things you touch every day, like the faucet, the cabinet hardware, and the counters, and save on what is hidden or rarely used.

3. Cabinets: stock, semi custom, or custom?

Cabinets are usually the single biggest line in the budget. Stock is fastest and cheapest. Semi custom gives you more sizes and finishes. Full custom fits an odd space perfectly and lasts the longest. The right answer depends on your layout and your budget, not on what is fanciest.

4. Countertops: durability versus looks

Quartz is hard, consistent, and low maintenance. Natural stone like marble is beautiful and ages with character but wants more care. Pick the one that matches how you actually cook, not just how it photographs.

5. Who is running the project?

Someone has to coordinate the trades, the inspections, the deliveries, and the thousand small decisions. With a design build team, that is one accountable group rather than you playing project manager on nights and weekends.

Plan ahead

Give yourself three to four months of planning before demo. Rushed decisions are the ones you regret, and they are the ones that stall a job halfway through.
